An online marketplace for University of Washington students to buy and sell textbooks

The Problem

Through our research, we found that all students come from different financial backgrounds and some struggle to purchase textbooks at a fair price. Students also lack the time and ability to buy and sell used books on their own. So we explored through existing marketplaces that students can buy and sell used textbooks. We found that students were not seen as a priority over revenue and decided that we want to prioritize students over businesses. With our solution, students do not have to worry about high textbook costs, low resale values, and time constraints.

The Solution

We explored through our platforms such as Chegg and Amazon, but they were all business first models that did not take into account the students. The textbooks were not much cheaper than the bookstores and finding the right version, and edition of the book became too vexing. We wanted to create a platform that was simple, straightforward, and easy to use. Ultimately, this platform should ease the financial burden for most of UW’s students while allowing for an organized platform in buying and selling your textbooks for other students.

What we do

MyUW Integration

Our system connects with UW's MyUW system to ensure that the right textbook shows up for each student based off their schedule.

Buy Textbooks

We're a student first book exchange. We're getting rid of the middle man in selling textbooks, so students can buy textbooks at affordable costs.

Sell Textbooks

Users can just input ISBN value and the book information will automatically be filled in. You only need to input the condition, price you want to sell for, and location you want to pick up.

Message Sellers

A messaging system through our platform ensures that your contact and personal information is not shared with anyone.

Ratings

A rating system incentives students to be honest with buying and selling their textbooks. Especially, since BookSwap links to UW's MyUW system.
